Dying Light 2 takes place around 15 years after the events of the first game. The virus has become much more dangerous and incurable, taking out most of the population. There are a few settlements throughout the land, with some people who would travel from town to town, known as Pilgrims. You play as Aiden, a pilgrim looking for his sister. Shortly into the game he hears about a contact who may be able to help him in a walled off city known as Vilidor. Inside Villedor is where the story will unfold.
There is one main story to follow quest by quest with a lot of side quests everywhere. Some quests and side-quests will involve choices to be made. In the main story these choices more often than not will effect the story your going to experience and ultimately the ending your going to get, so choose wisely, there is no going back without restarting everything.
As a Pilgrim Aiden had to learn how to fight and move around fast to survive the never-ending waves of infected in the wilderness, so he is well versed in the art of Parkour. He can run, climb, and jump all around the city, and if need be, fight the various enemies he may encounter. Through the various parkour and combat actions you take you witll get xp in those trees where you can choose new skills for moving faster or new fighting moves.
Every six skill points you level up your character rank will go up. Every zone in the game is denoted with a rank level to help you decide what you may or may not be ready for. If your only at rank 2 you may not have a fun time in a rank 5 area, the enemies would be far stronger than the gear you have found thus far so it would be worth taking on quests at your ranking.
But you will need more than just xp for proper character growth. In Dying Light 2 they’ve add Inhibitors, these are used to combat the virus and when you use them you can choose to up your stamina or health bar. There are a finite number of Inhibitors hidden throughout the game, and you will need 3 for every use. Thankfully there is an item you receive early on that tells you when you are near an inhibitor and how far off you are, turning it into a fun game of hot and cold.
Aiden comes with a pack that can carry a lot of stuff. Copious amounts of clothing and weapons, as well as equipment used for healing or fighting, and all the ingredients needed to craft a lot of useful items. There are five spots to equip his clothes, the head, chest, wrists, hands, and legs. Each piece of clothing belongs to a different set type depending on your playstyle you may prefer one set over the other. Brawler for the one handed weapon usage, tank for 2 handed weapons, ranger for long range fighting, and medic for faster or better heals. Those are the main stats with a lot of various other stats that can be obtained on gear. After the clothes there are a lot of different weapons to choose from. The one handed weapons are faster than the two handed but deal less damage, with the two handed weapons timing is necessary to get good powerful hits off without taking a lot of damage yourself.
All equipment has various ranks and rarities to watch out for. The more rare a piece of clothing is the more stats it will give you, while the more rare a weapon is the more mods you can put on them. Mods are modifications you can add to your weapon, adding a fire attack or a bleed effect on the enemy. You can buy the blueprints for the mods through vendors in the game, and upgrade them for better damage or proc percentages.
Dying Light 2, like it’s predecessor, has a huge scavenge and craft mechanic involved throughout the entirety of the game. Every building will have items strewn everywhere that can be temporarily marked with Aiden’s survivor sense and picked up for later use. They, too, have a rarity letting you know how useful they will be. The rarer materials are used for stronger crafting, like grenades for instance. But common scraps are very important too, those are the base for almost everything. Lockpicks are created using just scrap, and if your searching everywhere or have a hard time with the lockpick mini game, your going to want a lot of scrap for your lockpicks.
While exploring the city there will be a night and day cycle to watch out for. During the day you can still find zombies roaming the streets, but at night they will become more aggressive, a lot more will be out, and different variations can be found. The different variant infected will be much faster and stronger than the common biter. At night Aiden’s immunity will slowly decrease while he is not under a UV light, causing him to turn if he stays out for too long. There are various items he can use to up his immunity back up so it’s not all doom and gloom outside. Nighttime is also the only time a chase can commence. A chase is when Aiden has attracted too much attention to himself and infected start running and attacking out of nowhere. He can fight and level up the chase, but when the chase gets high, the more deadly enemies start to come at him making survival even more difficult.
As of writing this review the game has only been out for 2 weeks with some bugs remaining. There has been a lot of work done fixing the major issues the game has been having, I myself only experienced one game breaking bug. It was a never ending loop of leaving the mission area and dying in four seconds just to respawn and go through it all again. Other than that the bugs have been easily ignore.
Dying Light 2 was an excellent game. There were some points in the story that seemed like it was going somewhere but completely dropped it never to bring it back again but overall wasn’t to bad. I enjoyed playing multiplayer, one thing I really missed in multiplayer was the random competitions that would pop up in the first one, like who can reach the top of the tower faster or who can kill more zombies in a fixed amount of time. All in all I would say this game deserves to be in my top shelf, the lower end, but top shelf none the less. Well, thanks for watching, time to move onto the next one, see ya there.
